Let’s Talk About Character AI and Our Teens

Hey everyone,

We're living in an incredible era of technological advancement, and one platform that's gaining significant traction, especially among young people, is Character AI. But what exactly is it, and why should we, as parents, guardians, aunts, and uncles, be paying attention?

What is Character AI?

Imagine being able to create or chat with an artificial intelligence that has its own unique personality, speaks like your favourite celebrity, a historical figure, a fictional character, or even a “friend” designed just for them. That’s Character AI. It’s a powerful chatbot platform where users build or interact with AI characters that respond in human like ways. Teens use it for role-playing, creative writing, entertainment, or simply having a conversation.

How Are Our Teenagers Using It?

Our teens are digital natives, and they’re exploring platforms like Character AI with curiosity. Some common uses include:

1. Creative Fun: Teens use it to brainstorm stories, practice their English, or chat with AI versions of popular Nigerian artistes or folktale characters.

2. Companionship: For some, Character AI feels like a safe space to talk without judgment especially when real-life relationships feel complicated.

3. Escapism: It offers a digital escape, similar to how previous generations enjoyed novels or movies.

Where Does the Abuse Come In?

While the tool itself isn’t bad, misuse or unintended consequences can arise. This is where we must stay aware:

1. Emotional Over-Reliance: A teen struggling with school stress maybe JAMB prep or peer pressure may depend completely on an AI that is always “understanding.” This can limit their real-life coping and communication skills.

2. Exposure to Harmful Content: Because many characters are user-generated, some may expose teens to inappropriate or unhealthy conversations, even when filters exist.

3. Misinformation & Manipulation: AI can give confident but incorrect advice on sensitive topics. Some chatbots even guilt-trip users to stay online or validate unhealthy thoughts.

4. Privacy Risks: Teens may overshare personal details family issues, school information, emotional struggles without realizing the data is stored and used for training.

So What Should We Do?

Technology is not the enemy misuse is. Our responsibility is to stay aware and maintain open conversations.

Let’s talk to our kids about what they do online. Aunties, uncles, parents—reach out to the young people around you. Ask about the apps they use, the characters they chat with, and listen without judgment.

With guidance, our teens can enjoy technology safely while still developing healthy real-world relationships.
